Make no mistake: the regulators have arrived, and they are not just "concerned." They are armed with new laws.
As a leader—a CCO, GC, or CRO—you are likely defaulting to the governance playbook you know. You are thinking of this as the "next GDPR." This is a critical, foundational error. GDPR was about data privacy, a challenge focused on the storage and consent of relatively static information. The new wave of AI regulation is fundamentally different. It targets automated decision-making, systemic safety, algorithmic fairness, and operational transparency.
You are no longer being asked to govern a static database. You are being asked to govern a dynamic, autonomous, and often inexplicable decision-making engine, and to do it in real-time. Your 2024 governance model is not prepared for this.

This is the technical toolkit. It is an open-source "testing toolkit" approach designed to help companies validate and prove their models are fair and robust. It is the "how you prove it" (the Toolkit).
This is the executive headache that should be keeping you awake. These frameworks are different, overlapping, and complex. To make matters worse, the US is developing its own internal "patchwork" of state-level regulations, similar to what we saw with privacy laws.
This fragmentation creates a translation crisis. Consider this scenario: Your team in Texas, building a single AI model for a global customer, must now answer to all three masters.
Who on your team is responsible for translating that one technical test result into a legally defensible answer for the other two? How do you prove that your NIST-based process satisfies the EU's legal demands?
This is a "many-to-many" crisis. Your compliance team cannot manually map every single AI model, dataset, and test to this N-to-N matrix of overlapping global controls. It is operationally impossible.
The "playbook" you used for SOX or GDPR was based on manual audits, Word documents, and spreadsheets. That playbook is now obsolete. Manual governance cannot operate at the speed of AI development, nor can it manage the complexity of this new fragmented landscape.
A checklist cannot monitor a live model for bias. A spreadsheet cannot trace a model's lineage back to its training data.
You do not need a new checklist. You need a new system of record for AI.
